I am building a custom PC (not nearly my first). POWER ISSUESIntel Q9550, 4GB RAM, on an Intel DX38BT Boa?

  • Here is a little more about my problem.

I think my power supply is insufficient... What size should i go for?

    Intel Q9550 2.8 GHz Processor
    Kingston 1333MHz 2GB DDR3 Memory (x2)
    NVidia 8800 GTS video
WD 10,000 RPM S-ATA Hard Drive
    Intel DX38BT Motherboard

  • you can't have too much wattage so go for a 400 - 500 watts

  • Adam,

there is a cool PSU calculator I use that calculates your max possible power draw based on your component selection (as a fellow EE you should appreciate this ;) I think most people are surprised how little power is needed for a typical modern pc

    eXtreme PSU calc lite
    http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psuca...

I put in all your components with a few fans threw in and I got 283W so your 500w unit may have enough power but it may be lacking the EPS12V 8-pin power connector for the CPU power on the board - most ATX 2.x units have a 4-pin ATX12V by default and some boards with a high-end chipset refuse to POST unless all 8 pins are populated. Some board will accept the 4-pin compatibility but not all do.

So get a 4 to 8 pin cpu power adapter like this one http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/i... and see if that does the trick.

Another thing I would check is your PSUs +12v combined power, it should be at least 75% of the max draw which is 226.4v or 19A. So if your unit is a dual-rail it should be close to that for a 500w rated unit.

    cheers

  • Ignore aviatingamateur, hes a total idiot. There are hundreds of reasons why you might want to buy an enthusiast motherboard that is not made by nvidia, particularly if you are aware of the disadvantages of SLI and have no interest in ever using two cards. Nvidia's motherboards aren't all that great, and intels enthusiast boards are excellent. However, nvidia still makes great cards. His post makes absolutely no sense. If you have no intensions of SLI'ing then go for a high quality board like that and use an nvidia card (or ATI, whichever your preference is). The point is, it doesn't matter at all and aviatingamateur doesn't know what he is talking about.

  • Aviating..... if you dont know what your talking about then its REALLY not a good idea to rant.

The card is fine , aslong as you only want to run one , you cant go sli with that board (well you can , it has been done but it involves alot of chipset driver editing)

I have pretty much the same setup and im running it on an OCZ 520w powerstream , however im pushing it a little now.

Id go for 700w , higher if you can afford it , get a modular psu , they are much neater , and make sure you buy a good brand , do yuor research

and it really would be better if you went ATI with that board , a nice 4870x2 ;0)

  • Well, first you should be running nothing less than a 600w PS.

Second, what exactly is the problem?
