How can I uninstall my hard drive?
  • I have a dell inspiron 531, I'm looking to uninstall my hard drive and than reinstall it. I don't know exactly how you would do that and dell is no help since it cost $49.99 just for them to tell you how it's done which I think is a rip off. Just at least tell me if there's a website with a way to do it or any way you know how.


  • Go to BIOS setting and set first boot device as CD/DVD-Rom

    Then put the Windows XP cd.
    Restart the system.
    Press any key within 5 seconds.
    Process session starts(it verifies disc content is there or not)

    Press Enter to setup windows XP.
    Press F8 for the agreement
    it takes the default C:
    If you want you can change by ESC key.
    Select C:
    Format with NTFS
    It automatically copies files
    System restarts
    Note: change bios setting first boot device as Hard disk.(It shows the vendor Name)
    System restarts
    Installation process time shows 39MINTUES

    give the product key
    click Next
    Network settings-typical
    Next.
    Installation complete

    (for BIOS) as system restarts press F2 or DEL. try both the keys


  • uninstalling your hard drive will make it useless and if you mean delete and create then it's a different story you can delete the partation and create a new one so you can make more than one partation


  • I presume by uninstall you mean format and re-install? Do you have the CDs Dell sent when they sold the laptop? If not, do you have an operating system disk you can use that matches the license on the laptop?

    you should have cd's that came with your computer. Dell restore disks. put disk 1 in the drive and reboot the system then it will start to restore the system to factory setting (like when you first got the computer).
